Published July 06, 2007 10:00 pm - Funds being sought to get bring local troops home on leave By Mark Newman, Courier staff writer OTTUMWA — An Iowa National Guard wife has found a way for Ottumwans to help their local unit.
In August, when the troops of the 833rd Engineers get a few days off from training at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin, they’ll be responsible for finding their own way to Ottumwa and back to base. Jacque Bookin-Nosbisch, whose husband, Sam Nosbisch, is with the unit, contacted bus charter companies to find a good deal. Now she wants to do some fundraising, to bring in $3,584 by the end of July. That way, all the troops will be able to come home before deploying to the Middle East. “It’ll be a long time until we see them, so I thought this trip was very important,” said Bookin-Nosbisch. She opened a nonprofit account through Midwest One Bank, and any donations can be made to “833 Soldier Sponsor” at any branch. “If by some stroke of luck we raised more than that, we’d contribute it to raising money for an Internet system to communicate with them in Iraq. That’s our lifeline,” she said.
