Whistle-blower wins Iowa unemployment benefits

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A child care worker who wouldn't lie about a child's injury has been awarded Iowa unemployment benefits.

The Des Moines Register reports (http://dmreg.co/1buEWFD) that worker Brandy Jones filed an unemployment claim after her hours were cut by We Teach 2.

State records say an 8-year-old was hurt when the broken high chair she was in collapsed on March 14. Jones' filed an accurate report about the injury, despite being told by her supervisor to say the child bumped her head while playing.

The state says the supervisor warned Jones against complaining to Iowa authorities and cut Jones hours in half. The state says the center's owner told Jones to find another job after Jones complained to Iowa authorities.

A state judge says evidence showed the center had retaliated against Jones.
