Iowa city deploys insecticide in battle for trees

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (AP) — An eastern Iowa city has deployed insecticide in the battle to save its ash trees from an insect pest that's killed millions of the trees elsewhere in the United States.

Mount Vernon has assigned Mike Wehde from public works to the task of injecting the insecticide. Wehde told Cedar Rapids television station KCRG (http://bit.ly/1r3RWfo ) that the insecticide doesn't prevent the adult beetles from boring in and laying eggs but will kill the larvae that hatch. He says the shots are less expensive than removing and replacing ash trees, which many other communities have done.

The beetles are native to Asia and were first detected in Michigan in 2002.
