SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Dozens of children at a Sioux City elementary aren't letting chilly weather stop the seasonal Walking School Bus program.
The Sioux City Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1otWcpz ) 29 students participated Tuesday in Irving Elementary School's first day of the program, which takes place each school day during the spring and fall. The children were joined by adult volunteers.
The Walking School Bus is part of the school district's effort to become certified as a Blue Zone, a state and private initiative that encourages healthy living.
Backers of the walking program say the morning exercise also makes children more alert and ready to learn once they arrive at school.
For participants like 11-year-old Cynthia Perez, it's a chance to walk and talk with her friends.
