Airsoft pistols force lockdown at Dubuque school

Ottumwa Courier

---- — DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Police placed a Dubuque middle school on a brief precautionary lockdown after several airsoft pistols were found on campus.

The Dubuque Police Department issued the lockdown Thursday morning at Washington Middle School. They lifted it after they swept through the building and determined there was no safety threat.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports (http://bit.ly/13SqC92 ) one of the non-lethal pistols was found in a student's backpack. Two more were later found, but authorities have not released additional information.

Airsoft pistols resemble real firearms, but they use compressed gas or air to shoot plastic pellets. Police say they don't believe there was an intention to use the pistols in a violent way.
