Iowa projects competitive insurance prices

Ottumwa Courier

---- — DES MOINES (AP) — Insurance Commissioner Nick Gerhart says premium prices on the state’s new health care marketplace will be lower in Iowa than many other states.

In a news release Thursday, Gerhart says that for similar plans “Iowa’s rates will continue to compare favorably.”

The Insurance Division did not release complete pricing estimates, but offered a few examples. A 40-year-old non-smoker seeking a mid-range — or silver — plan in central Iowa would spend about $219 each month. That’s lower than the projected prices in most of the 17 states listed in a recent report from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Under President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, states must have a health exchange, with enrollment starting Oct. 1 and coverage on Jan. 1. Iowa is partnering with the federal government for the exchange.
