Police: Iowa woman left children outside apartment

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines woman has been accused of leaving her children outside an apartment during early morning hours.

Police say neighbors of 22-year-old Leah Marie Stockbauer reported that the woman's 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter were outside of the apartment crying shortly after midnight Thursday.

Police say officers found the boy wearing a T-shirt and no pants or underwear. They say the girl was wearing a urine-soaked diaper.

Stockbauer, who later returned to the apartment, told officers she left the children with a friend. The 4-year-old refuted that account to officers.

Officers say they found animal feces throughout the apartment, as well as little food. Accessible pills were also present.

Stockbauer faces two counts of child endangerment and remains at the Polk County Jail. Records do not list an attorney.
