Though the Ottumwa Fire Department was unable to save a burning house in the 400 block of South Davis Street, they kept the flames from seriously damaging nearby homes.
One witness said children who lived in the home escaped before the fire got too bad, but that has not been corroborated. A second witness said the OFD arrived quickly, but that the house went up even quicker, with visible flame shooting out the front of the structure before the first truck was on the scene around 8 p.m.
The OFD fire inspector was still on the scene as of press time late Friday.
