Ottumwa gives West a scare: Second-half push downs determined Bulldogs
By KELLY TERPSTRA, Courier sports writer
West’s senior guard Delandis Wright buried four 3-pointers and netted 16 points. Nathan Meints was the other Trojan in double figures with 11.
Ottumwa (10-13) was led by senior forward Jon Duree’s 13 points. OHS senior guard Jon Rusch ended his Bulldog career, along with Duree, with 12 points. Also playing in their last game as a senior for Holmes’ squad were Cory Gould, Kip Stuart, Ryan Schooley and Cody Thie.
“I was very proud of our seniors all year long. I’m talking about conduct of their play on the floor, their work ethic and contribution to our program. I thought they represented us very well,” said Holmes.
Zach Derby scored nine points. His brother, freshman A..J., netted just four points on 2-9 shooting. Each is the son of former Iowa Hawkeye linebacker John Derby, who played on the 1991 Rose Bowl team.
Ottumwa’s effort in postseason play put a cap to a season of which all who followed the Bulldogs can be proud.
“In the tournament we played well. As far as concentration, effort, preparation and competitiveness — I thought all of those things were there for us,” said Holmes.
