While southeast Iowa braces for ice tonight, a winter storm watch heralds snow for tomorrow.
Freezing rain is expected to begin overnight; the National Weather Service says anything that falls after 3 a.m. will likely freeze on contact. Snow and freezing rain could persist until 9 a.m.
Friday night brings a break, but Saturday brings back the freezing rain. Forecasters think that will hit after noon, changing to snow between 9 p.m. and midnight.
As of Thursday night, the National Weather Service predicted 2-4 inches of snow for Ottumwa on Saturday night. But that’s not the end of it. Snow will likely continue on Sunday. The best estimates for total snowfall are more than six inches by the end of the storm.
Then the cold arrives. Sunday night’s low is expected to be only 2 degrees. Monday’s high will struggle to reach double digits, and Monday night will be below zero.
The storm will probably trigger Ottumwa’s snow ordinance for the first time this season. Ottumwa officials sent out a reminder about the ordinance on Thursday. The ordinance governs parking along designated snow emergency routes during and after storms.
No parking is allowed along the snow routes once the ordinance goes into effect.
Parking alternates on streets that are not designated as snow routes. Parking is allowed on the even side of the street on even-numbered days of the month. The odd side of the street is allowed on odd-numbered days.
