Ottumwa snow emergency ordinance in effect

OTTUMWA — Snow totals wound up being on the lower side of forecast predictions, but it was still more than enough to push Ottumwa into activating the snow emergency ordinance for the first time this winter.

Preliminary totals show the Oskaloosa area received the most snow at about eight inches. Totals varied widely across the area. Albia checked in at 6.5 inches, while Plano in Appanoose County had five inches. The official total measured just south of Ottumwa was 5.5 inches, though the exact amounts people woke up to varied depending on where they were.

Roads across most of Iowa are snow covered, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Cold weather will arrive on the heels of the storm. Temperatures will fall through the day Sunday. Sunday night’s forecast low is only 4, and Monday night’s low is expected to be -11. It’s not a record, but it will be very cold.

The city's snow ordinance is designed to speed the process of clearing the roads and getting traffic back to normal. No parking is allowed along the snow routes once the ordinance goes into effect.

Parking alternates on streets that are not designated as snow routes. Parking is allowed on the even side of the street on even-numbered days of the month. The odd side of the street is allowed on odd-numbered days.
