These personal trainers want to ‘Shape Up Ottumwa’

OTTUMWA — Convenient, affordable and effective fitness training for people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities.

That’s the mission of Shape Up Ottumwa Bootcamp, and the next round of camp will start Aug. 3.

Shape Up Ottumwa, 212 S. Market St., is a collaborative effort of four independently contracted and fully insured professional personal trainers with more than 30 years of combined professional experience.

The trainers include Roxanne Cagwin, Colleen Clark, Leslie Podliska and Tim White. They were working with several women who were about to graduate from boot camp Friday morning at the Jimmy Jones Shelter in Ottumwa Park.

Clark said camp participants get fitness training three days a week for a six-week period.

“Our main goal for camp is to use the outdoors,” Clark said. “There are [exercises and training] people can do on their own and it’s an introduction to the city’s parks. We went to Foster Park recently and we didn’t even know the park was there.”

People can exercise without an expensive membership somewhere, she added.

Cagwin said the campers went to Wildwood Park last week and worked out on the hill a lot.

“We were running up the hill and doing calisthenics and side squats,” she said. “The main thing is it doesn’t matter what your fitness level is or how old you are. Our youngest camper is 22 and the oldest is 70.”

Clark said each trainer has a specialty, and hers is kick boxing.

“Leslie is our yoga queen and Roxanne does belly dancing,” she added.

White specializes in post-secondary rehabilitation and Tai Chi.

“We’re not just local — we’ll go anywhere,” Clark said. “We want to take fitness to the people, and we’re willing to go to them.”

The trainers do have a downtown business location, 212 S. Market St., which is the former location of Grandma’s Attic (behind Dollar General).
