Ottumwa Courier

---- — FAIRFIELD — Three environmental warriors will share how they are empowering communities to fight back against CAFOs at the Jefferson County Farmers and Neighbors, Inc. (JFAN) annual meeting “NO MORE! How One Woman and a Team of Lawyers Are Helping Neighbors Stand Up to Factory Farms” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.

Lynn Henning, the 2010 Goldman Environmental Prize winner for North America, will be joined by nationally renowned CAFO-fighting attorneys Charlie Speer of Kansas City, Mo., and Richard Middleton of Savannah, Ga.

The Leopold Group Sierra Club, solar-powered KRUU-FM, the Sustainable Living Coalition, Radish Magazine and Little Village Magazine are co-sponsoring the event.

Henning will talk about her journey over the past 12 years, share how she monitors CAFOs in Michigan and discuss how here in Iowa, on a grassroots level, residents can uncover pollution problems that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is unable to monitor.

JFAN president Jim Rubis will present an overview of JFAN’s activities, and a question-and-answer forum will be held at the conclusion of the event.

Admission is free, and a donation of $5 is welcome to support JFAN’s mission. For more information, visit www.jfaniowa.org.
