OTTUMWA — Scholarship application forms are now available for the Edward J. Schwartz Educational Trust Fund Scholarship Program for the 2014-15 school year.
This is the 21st year for the scholarship fund, which was established by the Trust Department of South Ottumwa Savings Bank. Schwartz was a longtime Ottumwa contractor who was interested in area students pursuing their educational opportunities.
Last year, 13 area students were awarded a scholarship. In the 21 years since the scholarship fund was created, $513,466.33 in funds have been distributed. In addition, the sum of $325,905.30 was contributed to the Indian Hills Scholarship Fund.
Wapello County residents may obtain application forms from area high schools or university financial counselors and from the South Ottumwa Savings Bank Trust Department. The forms must be returned by March 1, 2014. The trustee anticipates that additional scholarship money will be awarded in April for the 2014-15 school year.
Schwartz scholarships are awarded to residents of Wapello County who are enrolled full time at St. Ambrose University, the University of Iowa, Iowa State University or the University of Northern Iowa. Applications will be considered on the basis of scholastic performance, leadership, citizenship and financial need. Selection is made without regard to gender, race, national origin, creed, age, marital status or disability.
Scholarship awards will be limited to $1,500 or less. Applicants must sign a note for 1/3 of the scholarship amount, which is due and payable in full five years from the date of the signed note. Applicants may reapply annually.
