State fair announces new food offerings

DES MOINES — Does a Shrimp Corndog sound good? What about a Coconut Mountain or a Smoothie on a Stick?

That last is a dead giveaway, of course. If it's food on a stick, it's probably from the Iowa State Fair. The fair has announced eight new foods available at this year's event, August 8-18.

Here's the fair's description of some of the items:

Shrimp Corndog

A a savory snack featuring three fresh shrimp dipped in corndog batter, fried to golden perfection and topped with a sweet jalapeno glaze.

Smoothie on a Stick

The strawberry smoothie is frozen, put on a stick and ready to be eaten.

Bacon Wrapped Riblet on a stick

A pork riblet wrapped in bacon, hickory smoked and then basted with barbeque sauce.

Sweet Corn Corndog

A hot dog dipped in batter enriched with fried sweet corn.

Rib Shack Cowboy

Cowboy beans, brisket or pork, cole slaw, a signature chip and barbeque sauce in a spice-flavored waffle cone

Coconut Mountain

A soft and chewy coconut ball rolled in coconut flakes and dipped in fresh chocolate.

Two of the entries are self-explanatory enough that the fair didn't include a specific description: The Fried Brownie on a stick and the Soft Salted Chocolate-Dipped Almond Pretzel on a stick.

More new foods will be announced next month.
