Seeking volunteers for 2014 Race For The Cure

2014 Race For The Cure

The Southeast Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen is looking for volunteers for our Race For The Cure committee as well as our affiliate board. Our race will be held May 10, 2014, but preparations begin now, including contacts with sponsors, design of race materials, contacts with teams, survivor events and race day organization. The committee meets once a month for 1-1/2 hours until the month before the race.

In 1982, Nancy Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. As part of that promise, the Race For The Cure series was developed as a means to fund education, research and early detection of breast cancer. In 2013 the Southeast Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure was able to grant over $160,000 in funds in our 10-county area of Wapello, Mahaska, Keokuk, Jefferson, Van Buren, Davis, Monroe, Lucas, Appanoose and Wayne for mammograms, ultrasounds and breast health education.

Anyone interested in getting involved as a volunteer or sponsor, contact Gayla Harrison or Laurie Hornback at komen.seiowa@gmail.com or Gayla at (641) 682-8326.

  • Sunburn isn't the only sign of summer that can leave you itchy and blistered

You've got a rash. You quickly rule out the usual suspects: You haven't been gardening or hiking or even picnicking, so it's probably not a plant irritant such as poison ivy or wild parsnip; likewise, it's probably not chiggers or ticks carrying Lyme disease; and you haven't been swimming in a pond, which can harbor the parasite that causes swimmer's itch.
