Arrest made in Fairfield drug investigation

Ottumwa Courier

---- — FAIRFIELD — Officers of the Fairfield Police Department were involved in two related drug investigations on Wednesday, one resulting in an arrest.

These investigations were a result of officers using controlled substances intelligence. This is a program where law enforcement personnel share criminal activity information with other officers and deputies in Fairfield, Jefferson County and Iowa. This is due to the fact persons involved in criminal activity do not stay in one jurisdiction, and there are several law enforcement agencies in Iowa with limited resources of investigative personnel and equipment. In these investigations, the intelligence was initiated by Fairfield police officers and the investigations were led by Fairfield officers as well.

The first search warrant was at an unspecified address, as criminal charges have not been filed yet and it is an ongoing investigation. Officials report that it was in Fairfield and there was drug paraphernalia located and seized. As soon as this investigation is completed, Fairfield police will release the names of any persons charged with a crime.

The second search warrant was executed at the Leisure Living Trailer Court, 200 N. 28th St. Lot #38, in Fairfield. There was no meth lab found at this location. Due to hazardous materials associated with meth production labs, law enforcement agencies often utilize specially trained officers or deputies to clear or confirm the residence has no hazardous materials at the location.

From this search warrant, Michael Ray Buford, 50, was arrested and charged with possession with the intent to deliver more than five grams of methamphetamine (a Class B felony), possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance – marijuana (a Class D felony), drug tax stamp violation (a Class D felony), immediate possession or control of an offensive weapon (a Class D felony) and possession of drug paraphernalia (a simple misdemeanor).
