North Mahaska Jazz Band are Class 1A state jazz champions

OSKALOOSA — The North Mahaska Jazz Band, under the direction of Bruce Peiffer, just won their fourth championship in six years on April 8.  

Megan Goemaat, Trumpet;  Megan McGriff, Trumpet; Julia Groenenboom, Trombone; and Jenna Carrico, Alto Sax were awarded outstanding soloists awards for the daytime performance.  Groenenboom and Carrico were announced as two of the top four performers in Class 1A for the day.  

The band competed against the top 15 Class 1A Jazz Bands in the state during the daytime performances and earned a spot to perform on the Civic Center Stage during the finals competition.  The top two bands in each classification perform that evening at the Civic Center to place either first or second.  The band is proud to acknowledge Musco Lighting as the prime financial supporter of the Iowa Jazz Championships.  

Members of the band are:  Saxes:  Jenna Carrico, Rachel Sherburne, Andrea Loving, Melissa Knoot,  Melinda Hammen, Flute: Carly Ehret, Trombones:  Julia Groenenboom, Jacob Dahm, Jakob Bortell, Gabe Hammen, Tyler, Foster,  Trumpets:  Megan Goemaat, Ariel LaRue, Megan McGriff, Libby Brown, Sydney McCulley, Reece Strasser, Jacob Sampson,  Rhythm Section:  Katie McGriff, Jac Munson, Caitlin Sampson, Brett Current, and Tressa Watts, Austin Witt, Caleb Gipple.
