The zombies are coming!

MORAVIA — Humans at Honey Creek Resort State Park will have to keep a keen eye behind them on Saturday, Oct. 19, because zombies will be chasing after them.

Though there will hopefully be no real zombies walking the grounds, humans will face off against their pretend living-dead counterparts at the second annual Undeadathlon, taking place from 3:30 p.m. until around 8 p.m.

The living and the not so living will compete in games of capture the flag, a brain-eating contest and a 4K run that will test the speed and dodging ability of the humans. Participants will traverse several acres of the park, but zombies will only be allowed to run during the capture the flag game. Those wanting to be a part of the living dead team will have to keep their efforts to a walk for the 4K.

“Zombies can participate in the run, but they can’t run,” said organizer Jacob Ahee. “The whole scariness of zombies is that they keep coming. Plus, it gives runners a little better of a chance to get away.”

Runners will have three flags, which basically represent how alive they are. If zombies manage to take all three, that runner will have to turn into a zombie and walk the rest of the way.

This is the second year the Undeadathlon will take place at the park. The first year saw a lot of success, according to Ahee, as around 90 people, both alive and kind of alive, came to have fun and show off their zombie skills for free.

The idea for the event came from the zombie craze that seems to have swept the nation recently, according to Ahee.

“I like The Walking Dead, and zombies are a huge pop culture thing right now,” he said. “Why not make it interesting for people who want to run?”

Ahee asks that only those above the age of 13 participate in the events, which are all entirely free. T-shirts will be sold for $10 apiece, with the winners of the brain-eating contest and 4K receiving them for free. Prizes will also be given to the zombies that “kill” the most humans and vice versa.
