Two days of fun this year at Eldon Old Iron Days

ELDON — Some things about the Eldon Old Iron Days have changed in its second year. What hasn’t are the antique cars, tractors and other items that make the event truly one of a kind and fascinating for the guests.

The major change this year is that instead of only being a one-day event, Old Iron is spread into two days. It will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Wapello County Fairgrounds.

“The group of us putting it together wanted to try it for two days,” organizer Tom Nichols said. “It is a lot of work to set up for one day, so why not set it up for two days?”

Eldon Old Iron Days is a way to educate the younger generation who might not know what some of the old machinery was used for in its prime. It’s also an opportunity for those interested in antique machinery to interact with others who share their passion and to have a little fun with the old tools floating around the community.

“The group of us enjoys our hobby, and we want to get together one last time and have a little bit of a play day,” Nichols said.

Included in the attractions for the show are big steam engines that will have to be trucked in on Sunday, and both days will feature threshing machines that will thresh three loads of oats. There will also be plenty of vintage tractors and cars, as well as old gas engines, a steam-powered saw mill and other various farm tools.

The Masonic Lodge #480, out of Eldon, will provide a lunch on both days. Saturday they will be grilling, and Sunday they will have loose-meat sandwiches. The lunches will cost money but will not break your wallet.

“The whole idea is to keep it cheap for those who just want to come and look around,” Nichols said.
