Eddyville tour showcases historic properties

---- — EDDYVILLE — Want a good look at some historic homes and a couple that show off newer styles? This weekend’s Eddyville Tour of Homes might be a good bet.

The event is a fundraiser for the Eddyville Historical Museum. Tickets are $10 and come with a map of the homes. Those go on sale a half hour before the tour each day at the museum, 101 S. Third St.

The tour itself predates the museum. One of those earlier tours was the debut for Linda Lewman’s home. She and her husband opened their doors for a tour back in the early 1990s. “We didn’t have a historical museum in the early 1990s,” she said.

Lewman’s involvement with the museum led directly to her return to this year’s tour. She figures she has been associated with the museum for seven or eight years. This year they asked whether she might be interested in being one of the stops.

Like Lewman, Connie Johnson’s home was part of an early tour before the museum lured her back in this year.

“They had asked us if we would be on it, and we have a big, old house,” she said. “And we enjoy decorating.”

The Lewman home is well over a century old. That puts it in good company, with three of the five homes built more than 100 years ago. Faith Community Church is in that category as well with more than 150 years’ service.

That’s part of the attraction for Lewman.

“We have several older homes here,” she said. “A couple of the newer ones are people who like to decorate.”

Johnson said she enjoys seeing older homes, so giving people a chance to see hers made sense. She’s proud of the original woodworking in the home’s main floor, something newer construction doesn’t often have.

As excited as Johnson is, now it’s a rush to the finish line.

“We are decorating,” she said. “Almost finished.”

The tour is a two-day event. It runs from 5:30-8 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The museum will have refreshments and special exhibits available during the tour.
