Pella sports park project advances

---- — The Pella City Council has backed the next step for the Pella Sports Park Project.

The project dates back well over a year; the initial 28(E) agreement with Fields for Our Future, Inc., signed in March 2012. Phase I base bid work generally consists of installation of five baseball fields, multi-purpose fields, approximately 175 parking spaces, a paved entrance drive, a utility building, a concessions building, a restroom facility, site utilities, irrigation, landscaping, and wetland mitigation.

An alternate bid items include additional landscaping, field lighting, additional shade structures and upgrading the concrete thickness for the pavements areas from four inches to five inches. The engineer’s opinion of probable costs for the base and alternate bids was $6.1 million.

There are additional items to be completed during Phase 1 of the project that are not included in the base bid price or alternates. These items, to be purchased direct and/or under separate contract, include bleachers, signage, garbage cans, picnic tables, portable cricket pitch, portable pitching mound and playground equipment with a total estimated cost of $249,935.

The City of Pella pledged $2.5 million of local option tax revenues for the project through the city’s 28(E) agreement with Fields For Our Future. The city also plans to move the parks division to the complex.
