Loose roof tiles to be removed

OSKALOOSA — The Mahaska County Board of Supervisors approved having Wood Roofing and Sheet Metal Co. come to the Mahaksa County Courthouse and remove loose roof tiles.

Mahaska County officials closed the main entrance to the courthouse this past Thursday due to clay roof tiles that have come loose during recent stormy weather.

The supervisors discussed their options to get the roof fixed and the courthouse main entrance open again.

“We need to get it open as soon as possible,” Board Chairman Mike Vander Molen said.

Supervisor Greg Gordy said that the Des Moines-based roofing company could have three workers in Oskaloosa on Thursday and Friday to work on the courthouse roof. Their rate for work is $70 per man hour, he added.

The supervisors also pondered about the long-term future of the roof — whether to fix the current damage or replace the entire roof.

The supervisors looked at both clay roof tile and plastic tiles.

Vander Molen did not want to replace the loose tiles with more clay tiles.

“I won’t authorize putting that back on,” he said. Vander Molen cited three incidents of tiles coming loose on the roof and he did not want to have the county held liable for any injuries or damage from the heavy clay tiles.

Maintenance Director Troy Bemis said there have been no injuries or property damage as a result of the loose tiles.

Supervisor Mark Doland said he wanted to look at the roof’s current warranty and research if there has been similar problems with other clay-tile roofs.

The supervisors will continue discussion roof repairs at their upcoming meeting next Monday.
