Trial date in attempted murder case set

SELMA — The trial date has been set in the case of an Ottumwa man who allegedly fired multiple shots into a Selma home last fall.

Rusty Salter, 33, of Ottumwa, was charged with attempted murder and second-degree criminal mischief in Selma on Oct. 13 after allegedly taking a rifle from his vehicle following an argument and firing multiple rounds into the home of Randall Ray Ritz, 51, 11883 Bridge St., Selma.

At Salter’s pretrial conference last week, the court set his trial date for June 11 and noted it is expected to take four days.

Randall was charged with manufacturing marijuana and failure to affix a drug tax stamp. At his pretrial conference, he pleaded guilty to one count of manufacturing marijuana and requested a plea agreement to dismiss the other two charges, failure to affix a drug tax stamp and another charge of manufacturing marijuana. He will be sentenced on June 5.

Following the shooting, Ritz’s brother, Richard Todd Ritz, 53, of Mustang, Okla., then allegedly proceeded to walk out of the house and fire a warning shot in the air with a .357 handgun. He was charged with assault (display or use of a weapon) and willful injury.

Richard Ritz claimed self defense and pleaded not guilty. His pretrial conference is scheduled for April 24 and his trial is set to begin on May 21.

Following the incident, Austin Lee Ritz, 29, of Oklahoma City, Okla., was also charged with willful injury. He also claimed self defense and pleaded not guilty. His pretrial conference is also scheduled for April 24 and his trial is also set to begin on May 21.
