Treasurer upset with Van Buren Supervisors

KEOSAUQUA — A vacancy in the Van Buren County treasurer’s office won’t be filled until after the outcome in next month’s primary election.

Van Buren County Board of Supervisors decided that was the best course of action, but their decision brought the ire of County Treasurer Tanya McQuoid, who is in a three-way race in the Republican Primary.

The term of the treasurer expires Jan. 1, 2015. The winner of the general election in November takes over then.

Supervisors also accepted with regret a resignation from motor vehicle deputy treasurer Paige Novak, effective May 23. The board met with McQuoid regarding the vacancy. She requested the board approve hiring a person to replace Novak as soon as possible because Novak is on sick leave.

Supervisor Bob Waugh recommended waiting until after the primary election. Supervisor Ted Nixon agreed.

McQuoid said that leaving her office one person short would lead to the curtailing of service, including closing at the noon hour. There would be McQuoid and two others in the office. And a medical situation in the office with one employee has even put more pressure, she added.

“You’re going to have to explain it to your constituents,” McQuoid said.

“This has been a stressful time in the office right now,” she added. “We’re in a crunch in our office. Most days we are working with two people in the office. I want you to understand.”

Nixon asked McQuoid what the obligations with the Iowa DOT as far as office hours on driver’s license is concerned. “What about having longer hours on three or four days a week?” Nixon asked.

McQuoid said she would have to check the 28E agreement between the county and the state.

Supervisors decided not to hire any replacement right now, instead waiting to see the results of the June primary election. An upset McQuoid told supervisors as she was leaving the room, “After the election, if I lose, there’s going to be another resignation, that’s a guarantee.”
