Nelson Pioneer Farm Fall Festival set for Sept. 21

OSKALOOSA —

This year, the Mahaska County Historical Society is celebrating the 48th anniversary of the Fall Festival at the Nelson Pioneer Farm.

The Fall Festival is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21.

“We're sticking with the same tried and true plan,” Nelson Pioneer Farm curator Kelly Halbert said.

“It's our main event and it's the 48th year,” she said. “It's family friendly and it's fun to be at.”

The flag raising ceremony and Pledge of Allegiance will be held at 9:30 a.m. and the festival runs until 4 p.m.

The music group New Broom, from Iowa City, will take the stage at 10 a.m. to entertain the crowd.

“They played here last year,” Halbert said.

Other musicians set to perform for the festival include Gordon Barker, who plays old-time country music and Rex McCall, who will play the harmonica, Halbert said.

Another Fall Festival favorite is the afternoon parade.

“We are getting both of our fire engines in the parade,” Halbert said. “It's fun to see the old engines out.”

Also, there will be a 1915 Model T and other vintage cars featured in the parade, she added.

There will be children's games for the young to enjoy beginning at 10 a.m. Children's races will be held in the afternoon, she said.

A pioneer supper will be served at the festival from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Another favorite at the festival is the fiddling contest. People can contact Nelson Pioneer Farm if they are interested in participating in the contest, Halbert said.

There will be plenty of outdoor activities in the fields during the festival.

Volunteers will harvest beans in the field. Also, farm workers also will thresh oats with vintage threshing machines. This year, people will have a chance to pick corn with a corn husker, Halbert said.

Several buildings on the Nelson Pioneer Farm campus will be open for tours. New this year is the Hopewell Building, which is modeled after a women's dress shop from the 1870s, Halbert said.

Admission to the festival is $5 for people ages 12 and older. Mahaska County Historical Society members get in free.
