Jacob tops baby names for 14th year

Washington, D.C. — Referencing “every Tom, Dick and Harry,” doesn't include as many people as it once did.

The Social Security Administration has released the top baby names of 2012, and those supposedly common names are surprisingly far down on the list.

Thomas (Tom didn't register) only ranked 63rd. Richard (Dick's the nickname) was way down at 124. Harry actually charted, but it was a lowly 718th last year.

The top boys' names last year? Jacob, Mason and Ethan. Girls were led by Sophia, Emma and Isabella.

Jacob is in the midst of a long run at the top of the list: 14 years and counting. This is the second consecutive year at No. 1 for Sophia.

The SSA website has the full list, as well as a database to look up where your name comes in or what names were popular the year you were born. Click here to go to the site.

You've got a rash. You quickly rule out the usual suspects: You haven't been gardening or hiking or even picnicking, so it's probably not a plant irritant such as poison ivy or wild parsnip; likewise, it's probably not chiggers or ticks carrying Lyme disease; and you haven't been swimming in a pond, which can harbor the parasite that causes swimmer's itch.
