Shark Week ad polarizes viewers

OTTUMWA — The Discovery Channel's annual Shark Week is one of the most popular themed weeks on television. But a commercial for this year's edition has caused some controversy.

The spot features a fake newscast covering the release of “Snuffy the Seal” back into the wild. The release goes horrifically wrong.

The twist shouldn't be all that surprising, given that the channel's slogan for Shark Week 2013 is “It's a bad week to be a seal. For the rest of us it's pretty awesome.

Viewers are split into two camps. Some are saying the commercial is in bad taste and never should have been made. Others think it's among the funniest commercials of the year.
