OSKALOOSA — People teed-off Friday and Saturday to support the Mahaska County YMCA at the Osky Winter Open at Penn Central Mall.
Individuals, families, businesses and students played 18 holes of miniature golf in Central Court of Penn Central Mall as part of the third-annual fund-raising event. A group of business sponsors built and decorated creative themes for each hole of the course.
“We appreciate the business sponsors who built the holes,” said event coordinator Linda Crookham-Hansen. Titan Machinery was a new sponsor this year, she added.
The Osky Winter Open began with a flighted golf tournament. Fifteen two-person teams participated in the tournament, “which was awesome,” Mahaska County YMCA Executive Director Dawn Collins said.
Eric Stout and Doug Cohrt were the grand champions of the tournament with a score of 92, Collins said.
Other teams who placed in competition included: Trevor Vos and Cody Major shot a 96, which earned 2nd place. Chris Roach and Jason Shafer rounded out the Championship flight with a 102. First Flight winners were John Sterns & Brian Snitker shooting a 118 with 2nd and 3rd going to Ryan Bandstra & Jeff Swim and Tim Veiseth & Mattt Denbergen respectively. The 2nd Flight was captured by Lyton DeGroot & Joe Torrence with the teams of Kevin Wright & Malinda Ratliff and Stacy Bandy & Mary Cooksley rounding out the flight, according to a YMCA press release.
“That was a lot of fun,” Collins said.
Besides the tournament, there was a People’s Choice Award for hole decoration.
“With a close race for the coveted People’s Choice award, Cablevey Conveyors squeaked out the win for the 2nd time. It was a very close race between Cablevey and ICI, the People’s Choice winner in 2012.,” according to the YMCA press release.
After the tournament, the course was available for open golf.
