City wants to purchase armory

One item on the agenda for the Centerville City Council meeting Monday night has the council voting to make an offer to purchase for $1 from the state of Iowa Armory Board the vacant Iowa Army National Guard Armory on Dewey Road.

The National Guard closed the Armory on Jan. 24.

According to a Daily Iowegian story published on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 1992, members of Centerville’s 224th Engineer Battalion completed their move into the new Armory on Sept. 12-13 of that year. The new facility is 42,000 square-feet situated on 15 acres of land.

Other items on the council’s agenda for Monday night’s meeting includes a water leak rates policy effective July 1. The policy’s stated purpose is to establish a “fair and consistent treatment of customers who have large unexpected leaks.”

The policy will allow customers who more than double their normal monthly water consumption — based on a 12 month rolling average — due to a water leak to request the leak rates billing. The leak rates policy reduces the customer’s sewer charge on the bill to their normal sewer charge which is based on a 12 month average.

The leak rates policy only applies “to one meter per residential or commercial establishment” and can only be requested once every five years.
