Dirt work for sports park should begin next week

Pella — Public Works Director Denny Buyert said dirt work on the City's sports park project should begin this weekend or early next week. 

Sandstone Management of Carlisle, charged with the dirt work, has been moving equipment in to start the first phase of the project. Todd Hackett Construction of Muscatine was the low bidder and was awarded the project at the Aug. 6 city council meeting. Hackett's bid was $4,884,000 plus $399,000 for alternates for a total bid of $5,283,000.

The base bid for Phase 1 included five baseball fields, multi-purpose fields, approximately 175 parking spaces, a paved entrance drive, a utility building, a concessions building, a restroom facility, site utilities, irrigation, landscaping and wetland mitigation. Alternates included additional landscaping, field lighting, additional shade structures and upgraded concrete thickness for paved areas from four inches to five. 

Additional items expected to be included in Phase 1, but not part of the aforementioned contract, are bleachers, signage, garbage cans, picnic tables, portable cricket pitch, portable pitching mound and playground equipment. These items total $249,935. 

Substantial completion of Phase 1 is expected by Aug. 1, 2014. Final completion is expected by Sept. 1, 2014. 

The sports park will be located west of the bowling alley, near Old 163, north of Skyline Ready Mix. Buyert believes this will be a fun project. Dirt work should run smoothly, as there is nothing on the site, not even utility infrastructure underneath.
