Betsy Luck named Middle School P.E. Teacher of the Year

OSKALOOSA — Betsy Luck is a physical education teacher at Oskaloosa Middle School and her dedication to the students and staff at the middle school has paid off with a Middle School P.E. Teacher of the Year award.

Luck received the Iowa Association For Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Middle School P.E. Teacher of the Year at the beginning of this school year.

“I found out around Sept. 1,” OMS Principal Andy Hotek said.

“She will receive the honor in Storm Lake at Buena Vista on Oct. 20,” he said.

Hotek said he will accompany Luck to Storm Lake to receive the award. Luck and the middle school will each receive a plaque in her honor.

“It's quite an honor,” Hotek said. “We're proud. … It's very well-deserved recognition.”

Hotek said Luck's peers nominated her for the award. He said Luck approached him this past spring for a letter of support.

In the letter of support, Hotek wrote: “Mrs. Elizabeth Luck has been a physical education teacher at Oskaloosa Middle School since August 2000. During these past thirteen years, she has been instrumental in bringing us a superior reputation along with many honors and awards. She has also contributed greatly to the articulation of the P.E. curriculum between the elementary school, middle school and the high school.

“More important than accolades, of course, is her ability to turn students on to physical health and fitness.  Her caring attitude and superior knowledge of the subject make her effective with students at all levels of ability.  In fact, she is especially diligent with students who have disabilities, those who historically have had major difficulties in P.E.

“Mrs. Luck is creative and innovative in her approach and has been selected on several occasions to lead at the building and district levels.  She has been active in writing our course guidelines for our district.”

“It's not a surprise that she won,” Hotek said. “She is extremely dedicated” not only to the students but also to the staff.

“She's our go-to person. She lives and breathes fitness,” Hotek said.
