ETCETERA: Sweet girl’s sweet potato wins Weird Veggie contest

By JUDY KRIEGER, Courier Editor

It was hard to resist both 7-year-old Bridgette Reinier and her weird veggie entry — a sweet potato shaped like a worm. She said the potato grew in her grandmother’s garden.

So, Bridgette, do drop by and pick up your prize for winning first place in the Courier’s annual Weird Veggies contest.

Our newsroom judges also liked another weird potato, a strawberry and a tomato.

Thanks to all of you again, for submitting your entries. They all were just wonderful.

We don’t often run photos of people holding the Courier in Ottumwa. But, recently there was a special occasion to do so.

Nathan Schumaker flew into Ottumwa Regional Airport Sept. 25 with his USMC C-130 air crew as part of a Military Expeditionery Unit (MEU) training.

Schumaker is a loadmaster with the U.S. Marine Corps and has been assigned to an Aerial Refueling squadron at Cherry Point MCAS in North Carolina. He just completed his AR training, with his check ride in the last few days before flying in.

It was a nice surprise for his parents, Gordon and Ellen Schumaker, his brother, Chris, and his girlfriend, Amanda Totten, as well as her parents, Paul and Mary Totten.

Nathan and the air crew were in town about three hours, long enough to enjoy a meal and a short visit with the two families. He joined the Marine Corps in March 2008.

For the Marines, we’ll make this wonderful exception.
