Hugh McCoy of Ottumwa enjoyed a recent 16-day tour of Spain, Portugal and the Rock of Gilbralter. He took the Ottumwa Courier to one of his favorite stops, at the 11th century Montserrat Monastery.
The Benedictine Monastery, which houses 80 monks, is 35 miles northwest of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain, and is the most popular pilgramage destination.
The monastery at the top of a 4,000-foot mountain also has a boys school concentating on vocal training. The school dates from the 13th century and has a renowned 50-member boys choir that performs daily in the Montserrat Basilica.
McCoy said he was brought up in a family of travelers and continues the family tradition. So far, he has traveled in more than 50 countries.
Glad you take the Courier along, Hugh!
