ETCETERA: Courier travels to Africa and around the country
By JUDY KRIEGER, Courier Editor
The Courier has been on the move so frequently these past few months, that it takes awhile to publish all the photos. We will, though, so please be patient and keep reading.
This week we have the Southeast Central Iowa AARP members’ photo. They enjoyed a Fall Foliage/AgVenture trip to Wisconsin. Highlights included watching cranberries being harvested from a bog, touring a large dairy operation, becoming informed about the production of ginseng, learning about the “Renew the Earth Institute” and shopping for some fruit and cheese.
“During the drive along the Mississippi and into and around Wisconsin, we enjoyed nature’s show of colors,” said tour director Rose Schultz. “Lots of fun!”
Love these travel groups that always remember to take a Courier along!

Janet Knowles and Janice Bailey took the Ottumwa Courier on a 10-state/nine-day “Gypsy Girls Tour” vacation to celebrate their “double nickel” (55th) birthdays.
Along their journey, they visited with classmate and former Ottumwan, Mark Gracey of Lakewood, Colo.
In Las Vegas, Nev., the two women stayed at the Monte Carlo Resort, spending five fun-filled days enjoying the sights, sounds and entertainment of Las Vegas and the Fremont Street experience.
Taking the southern route home, they made a stop in Albuquerque, N.M., to visit with Marie Knowles, Janet’s stepmother.
Driving Historic Route 66, the girls stopped to visit former Ottumwans and (Janice’s cousins) Sharon Grimes in Bartlesville, Okla., and Steve Yeoman of Aurora, Mo.
The Gypsy Girls arrived safely home on Sept. 19, having “done it their way” (in the words of Elvis: “I did it my way”!) And yes, the girls got a big hug from the King himself.
