KNOXVILLE — The Marion County Fair Board voted Monday night to pledge $10,000 a year for the next five years to the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame and Museum's “Expand the Dream” fund raiser.
The Hall of Fame is trying to raise a total of $3.8 million. Of that, $1.8 million will be used to build a new staging area and storage space for exhibits. The rest will be used to create an endowment, to ensure the longtime survival of the Hall of Fame.
“The Marion County Fair Association has always supported the Hall of Fame,” Hall of Fame Executive Director Bob Baker said. “We were really excited (about the pledge).”
The Hall of Fame has never turned down an exhibit donation. Current storage space it has is insufficient to hold the vehicle and other donations it receives.
Baker said in racing circles, the Fair Board is synonymous with the Knoxville Raceway. Most donors believe that if the Knoxville Raceway is standing behind something, it is a worthy cause. The Hall of Fame has been actively seeking donations for “Expand the Dream” for months. Baker said the donation will make a difference in the Hall of Fame's fund raising efforts.
“It would be hard to do without them,” Baker said.
