Whiskers-growing competition under way

The Ottumwa Daily Courier

---- — Whiskers-growing competition under way

BONAPARTE — Bonaparte Main Street’s Civil War Experience will be June 8. It is established to commemorate the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Held in conjunction with this experience, a whiskers-growing contest will be held.

Annette Spencer is organizing this event with a stress on authenticity and costume. Whiskers should reflect original styles from the Civil War years in the following five categories: best longest, well groomed; best Civil War goatee with or without mustache; best Civil War lamb chops, mutton chops; best shaggy, badly groomed beard and mustache; and longest, well-groomed handle bar mustache.

There will be no cost to enter and no age limit, but Civil War-era authenticity is preferred.

Judging will be done at the band shell in Bonaparte’s Historic Riverfront Park to be scheduled early afternoon on June 8.
