---- — OTTUMWA — In the spirt of Christmas, Wapello County Supervisors granted two wishes from area youth groups on Tuesday.
Ottumwa Soccer Club and Blakesburg Library will receive $1,000 from the county's Youth Involvement Fund. In the past, funds have been awarded to various organizations involving youth. Past recipients have included Little League and youth basketball leagues, as well as starting a fish farm and a local archery club.
By helping fund the youth-driven Ottumwa Soccer Club, its president, Andy Maw, indicated the funds would be used for supplies to keep the club going. In his application, he noted the club had not bought soccer balls in years, and its fields need to be striped, fertilized and seeded. In addition, most of the goals need new nets. If the county approved their request, Maw said they would use the money to purchase new soccer balls and upgrade some of the field supplies.
The Blakesburg Library will use its $1,000 to purchase two new Gateway computers plus software to be used by area youth patronizing the library. In its letter to the county board, Nicole Friedman, president of the Blakesburg Public Library Board of Trustees, noted it is in "desperate need of computers" since its budget barely covers the day-to-day operations.
In other business, the board:
• Placed on hold consideration of giving the city of Eldon money to help with a grant through the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Water Recreation Access Cost Share program to improve the current boat dock and ramp area. Supervisors indicated they will defer the request until the end of the year, when the board had a better look at its financial picture.
• Approved the promotion of Robin Hart from Clerk II to Deputy Recorder in the County Recorder's office. This is a full-time position that became available after Lisa Kent was voted in as the county's new recorder in July. The position of deputy recorder had been open since July. The position will pay $40,081.
• Approved the hiring of Brooke N. Weller a part-time Clerk I position in the County Attorney's office. She will be paid $11.18 an hour.
• Approved an agreement with the city of Eldon for on-site wastewater septic inspection services at $50 for each inspection plus mileage at $.565 per mile.
