What snow?

ELDON — Snow was in the air Saturday, but that wasn't enough to keep Eldon residents from supporting the American Gothic House. There was a party to attend.

American Gothic artist Grant Wood was born Feb. 13, 1891, and American Gothic House Center Administrator Holly Berg says he would have thoroughly enjoyed the celebration for his 123rd birthday. He just had the kind of sense of humor.

Berg was also pleased with the way supporters turned out for the event, regardless of the weather. They began arriving well before the doors were scheduled to open, and families of all ages turned out to be part of the celebration.

"It's always so nice to have the support of Eldon — they really get behind us and support us," Berg said while handing out door prize tickets and lots of smiles. "I don't hardly have to call anyone to get help. Everybody is always willing to do what they can."

There were eight kinds of soup donated, as well as homemade bread and desserts. Berg's mom, Jane, made the birthday cake, which featured cupcake balloons and an amazing stained glass window. Local businesses chipped in by providing door prizes and manpower.

All of the freewill donations for the meal will go toward educational programs at the American Gothic House Center. Every year they host an Easter egg roll and a Halloween party, and there will be an art program at the Center in just a few weeks. Berg explained that the community's support will help buy supplies for these special events.
