Wapello County updates website

---- — OTTUMWA — From the Chief Wapello statue to the Internet, Wapello County is getting a bit of a makeover.

For the past year or so, county leaders have worked on getting the Chief Wapello statue cleaned up and most likely will get the statue to its longtime spot atop the Wapello County Courthouse.

Meanwhile, the Wapello County Supervisors hired Professional Computer Services to update the look and contents of the county's website (www.wapellocounty.org). Board members also submitted information about the county.

For example, the Wapello County website now has information about various aerial flights set for spring. Every three to five years, the county contracts with private companies to fly over the county and take pictures of all property in the area. These flight pictures are used by realtors, surveyors, farmers, residents, county, city and state officials on many different projects.

Wapello County finished its 2012 flights in April 2013, according to the website. In March 2012, the aerial flights over Wapello County were cut short due to an early spring.

When contracting private companies to fly over Wapello County, the county aims for three factors — the flights take place when there is no snow cover, the flights take place when there is minimal to no leaf cover and the flights take place when the county has clear skies and no cloud cover.

The remainder of the 2012 aerial flights were captured in April 2013 and covered the following areas within Wapello County: Ottumwa, Eldon, Chillicothe, Kirkville, Eddyville, Agency and Blakesburg.

Jordan Scupien, the county's geographic information services manager, said Friday morning that he does have some new oblique photos for the website.

The oblique ones are those taken at a 45-degree angle so people can see the sides of houses, he added.

In the past, Scupien has said those photos would be helpful to the county assessor.

Scupien also noted the county is accepting resumes for the information technology director through June 28.
