GATE Easter egg roll heads inside thanks to the weather

OTTUMWA — Rainy weather moved the Easter Egg Roll from the American Gothic House to the Eldon Library’s community building Saturday.

Donna Jeffrey and other members of Gothic Area Tourism of Eldon (GATE) arranged an area for youngsters to roll their eggs inside the long building, which is part of the Eldon Library.

For those who haven’t been to an egg rolling event, the participant uses a huge spoon to keep the egg rolling toward the finish line.

The last group who competed at the egg party were Jace Mitchell, Tayton Frueh, Jared Mitchell, Chris LaRue and Tayden McPheter.

Jeffrey said McPheter was the only girl to compete in egg rolling.

Shelbie Jeffrey was one of the helpers for the springtime holiday. She helped the Easter Bunny (portrayed by Paige Evens) handle some excited children.

When asked how the event was going and if everything was OK, the Easter Bunny gave them the “thumbs up” signal. That satisfied the kids who ran to get some snacks.

Jeffrey said the event was GATE’s first attempt at an egg rolling event. She said she heard the White House staff was doing such an event for President Obama’s family.

“They’re in a famous house and we have a famous house in Eldon, so I thought we should have an egg roll event,” Jeffrey said.

Other fun Easter activities the chdlren were abel to participate in included making bunny ears, having their picture taken, receiving a goodie bag, story time, making a peek-a-boo chick and getting a commemorative egg.

GATE members were assisted by staff at the American Gothic House Center. The “Easter team” included a storyteller, who turned out to be Cindy Shepherd of Ottumwa. She’s the principal of Cardinal Schools.
