New city clerk for Eddyville

EDDYVILLE – Eddyville City Council members approved hiring a new city clerk this week — Katie Smith of Eddyville will fill the position.

Thirty people applied for the job; however, only about half of those met the city resident requirement.

“We had some extremely good applicants,” said Councilman Doug Greenlee.

The top three candidates were recently interviewed. The other two indicated that they would be willing to be considered for a deputy clerk position in the future. Smith is currently serving as deputy clerk and will take over as city clerk on July 1when Mickey Solano retires.

In another matter, Greenlee reported that work on the city park is well under way with renovations to the city bandstand expected to be completed by June 1.

June 1 will be a busy day for Eddyville with citywide garage sales throughout the day and the Eddyville Musicfest in the evening at the Eddyville Raceway Park. Featured bands will include Allison Brothers Band, Cadillac Jack, Kendall Meyer Band, 9 Miles North, Phoenix and Rukkus Rock Band. Proceeds go toward improvements to the park.

The council also set the City Wide Clean Up Day for Sept. 30. Previously the council voted to have this event in October; however, that time did not work out for the sanitation crew.

Additionally, the council approved a new All Terrain Vehicle ordinance for the city that will allow residents, age 18 and older, to drive ATVs on city streets with purchase of a city ATV permit and proof of insurance.

The council also approved a renewal of a franchise agreement with MidAmerican Energy for natural gas service in Eddyville for 25 years.
