---- — BLAKESBURG — Three juveniles have been charged with throwing an explosive in the Blakesburg Public Library's book drop box.
On Thursday, three Blakesburg juveniles — one 17-year-old and two 16-year-olds — were charged with reckless use of fire or explosives following the incident at the Blakesburg library on July 24. The charge is a serious misdemeanor.
"We got a tip from a citizen in Blakesburg that was able to point us in the right direction," said Chief Deputy Don Phillips.
Library staff reported the "homemade bomb" to the Wapello County Sheriff's Office at 10:30 a.m. July 24.
The explosion was created by pressure building up from a chemical reaction inside the bottle. No one was injured.
Through the course of the investigation, sheriff deputies also learned of a separate explosion in Blakesburg's park.
"We found out they'd stuck one in the cannon in the park," Phillips said.
Phillips said the devices both seem to have been planted around 10 p.m. July 23.
