ELDON — Santa Claus isn’t the only person traveling all around Iowa preaching the importance of giving during this time of the year.
Chelsea Fullenkamp, who was recently named Miss Iowa U.S. Miss for 2014, gave a special visit to children at Cardinal Elementary School, her alma mater, on Tuesday to help spread some holiday cheer and inform them about a wonderful charity.
She is participating in a special program put together by the America’s U.S. Miss Scholarship Program and Macy’s to help raise money for their national charity, the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She went to each class in the elementary school to help students write letters to Santa, and then she will send all of the letters to Macy’s, who will donate $1 for each letter to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Cardinal is not her only stop, either, although it might be her favorite since she is a graduate of the school and native of Agency. Fullenkamp is busy going to elementary schools all over the state to collect letters from children in preschool through fifth grade. Being able to tell the students about Make-A-Wish and the importance of giving especially during the holiday season is why she loves to participate in the program, she said.
When she isn’t running from one end of Iowa to the other, Fullenkamp is a full-time student at the University of Iowa. She graduated from Cardinal High School in 2012 before becoming a Hawkeye.
At the America’s U.S. Miss Scholarship Program’s Iowa and Illinois pageant in Davenport on Nov. 15-17, Fullenkamp was crowned state winner for the Miss division, ages 19-24, for the upcoming year. She was awarded her very own crown and banner, to go along with a rather hefty cash scholarship and other gifts.
Being the Miss Iowa U.S. Miss for 2014 means Fullenkamp will continue her busy ways, as she will get the opportunity to represent Iowa throughout the new year. She will even get the chance to go to Clearwater Beach, Fla., for the America’s U.S. Miss National Pageant from July 16-20, 2014. There she will participate with other state Miss titleholders to try to become America’s U.S. Miss for 2014.
