Supervisors OK, clarifiy homestead, military exemption disallowances

---- — OTTUMWA — Thirty parcels of property throughout Wapello County no longer will receive homestead or military exemptions based upon action taken by the Wapello County Board of Supervisors.

On Tuesday, supervisors cleaned up their record books for homestead and military exemptions.

County Board Chairman Jerry Parker said the homestead disallowances are based upon condemned or demolished dwellings, homes sold before July 1 or the person no longer has a vested interest in the property. "It's a state law that we clean up our record books," said Parker. "We do this every year."

As for the military disallowances, Parker said, the disallowances for those veterans who no longer have a recorded property interest; have not filed discharge papers for the exemption; or were disallowed because the reservist was not activated.

Wapello County Auditor Kelly Spurgeon indicated letters were sent to four veterans concerning not filing their discharge papers with the Recorder's office. Another letter will be forthcoming since the board's action. Individuals who have not filed discharge papers have until taxes are processed in July to have the exemption recorded on their property.

In other business, the board:

• Approved a contract with Herberger Construction of Indianola for $433,357.53 to replace a ridge on Dahlonega Road. The project was part of the December Iowa Department of Transportation letting. The project will take place sometime this summer.

• Approved $4,558.86 to cover the financial operating costs of the Area 15 Regional Planning Commission from July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015.

• Issued a letter of support for the Eddyville Historical Museum to the Monroe County Foundation for a grant of $2,500.
