Bulldogs rise above tough schedule

Cody Thie displayed his strong arm under center at quarterback in 2006 and helped out a bunch at the tight end position for the Bulldogs. Thie was smooth and threw a very good ball.
Brian Wilharber played tough at the fullback position and had his share of 100-yard rushing games. He continued his family tradition of excellent football players that have made their mark on Schafer Stadium.
Jon Duree was the Bulldogs’ leading receiver and also boomed several long punts this season for the Bulldogs. His sure hands and scoring savvy will be missed.
Ryan Schooley, one of many players that will suit up for OHS basketball coach Mike Holmes’ squad this season, is a bona-fide all-state talent — period.
Mitch Houk is big, strong and talented. He was a pivotal member of the offensive line and he should use his 6-7, 250-pound frame to good use in college ball.
Armando Rodriguez, a mid-season transfer from Clarke of Osceola in 2005, was an excellent cornerback. The undersized senior made up for it with heart, desire and all-around great play on the gridiron.
Thomas Kopatich was a reliable receiver for the Bulldogs, able to stretch defenses out with his pass-catching ability. He was also able to play for his father, which made his success extra special.
Hunter Daniels comprised an excellent secondary for Bulldog fans. He made impact plays at the safety position and could hit hard or swipe the pigskin away.
Jake Bowling rounded out the secondary, and without his aggressive style of play and all-out motor, the defense would not have been the same.
Linebacker Andrew Rupe, defensive end Seth Johnson, lineman Pieter Appel and linebacker Kip Stuart made it difficult for any offense to find breathing room.
It always starts up front. Tackle Bill Pester, guard Brett Graham, tackle Ryan Buck and Steve Wagner made sure the Bulldogs’ ground game flourished and the Ottumwa passing game had the protection it needed to win games.
Senior kicker Spencer Steffen wasn’t able to finish the season because of health issues, but he was the leading kicker in the conference before his departure.
The reserves that didn’t play as much as they probably would have liked also deserve a salute, for sticking it out, attending practices and contributing to the team in any way.
Jamie Ash, Blaine Sylvester, Spencer Wright, Ian Celania, Wyatt Morrison, Shawn June, Philip Wehmeyer, Zenni Brunno, Jacob Lewis, Bryce Bachman, Tony Rote, Josh Arnett, David Matthews, Carlos Mulatillo, Ian Logan, Cody Emery and Jonny Mullings rounded out a fine OHS squad.
This year’s team had a big senior class that produced a big year for all involved with the Ottumwa football program. They should cherish the good times they had, because the memories will last a lifetime.
