---- — EDDYVILLE – Official enrollment numbers aren’t available yet, but student numbers seem to be up in the Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont School District this school year. In fact, school board members approved 10 new open enrollments into the district this week.

Board members took care of several housekeeping items at their meeting, including approving and swearing in Board Secretary Susan Bayer.

New contracts were approved for Emily Smith, fifth-grade teacher at Eddyville Elementary School, and Donna Keesling, dean of students at the junior/senior high school. The board also approved three paid coaching positions and four volunteer coaching positions.

Board members learned that high school teachers Rebecca Knowler and Jeff Sands are on the Governor’s Leadership Committee for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Entrepreneurship.

Under Knowler and Sands' direction, local high school students will have the opportunity to get involved in real-world entrepreneurship projects. Some students will even have the chance to earn undergraduate credit from the University of Iowa.
