Library now offers digital magazines

OTTUMWA — Want to read any or all of the 81 magazines Ottumwa Public Library is offering online or download them to your PC, Macs or mobile device?

Library Director Sonja Ferrell said Wednesday that Zinio, provided through Recorded Books (RB Digital), offers full, cover-to-cover issues of digital magazines.

“Patrons will see the same content as the print issues, plus some titles include video and audio links as well,” Ferrell said. “We want to emphasize to the public that we’re doing this in addition to our current subscriptions.”

The library will still get the same magazines that are on the shelf. The only exception is Newsweek, which “has a different problem,” Ferrell added.

While electronic versions could be a trend, Ferrell noted Zinio doesn’t offer every magazine available.

“We just went live with this last week and people seem to like it,” she said. “It’s like Wilber E Book. It’s simple to use and you never have to return the magazine on your machine.”

And, several library patrons could look at the same magazine at the same time. That means if everyone in town wanted to read the current issue of Consumer Reports at the same time, they could do so with no waiting for any magazines.

Ferrell also pointed out the magazines from Zinio will have no due dates.

“As long as the library maintains a subscription to a magazine, patrons will be free to read them on their electronic device,” Ferrell said.

To see a full list of titles available as of January 2013 go to http://bit.ly/mags2013; and to sign up for the service, patrons should visit http://www.ottumwapubliclibrary.org/zinio.

Ferrell said a handy guide to setting up is available at http://bit.ly/oplzinio.
