Drumming to a different beat: Kids beat the heat

OTTUMWA — The Ottumwa Area Arts Council's Art in the Park continues this week: Today, 12:45-2 p.m. at Memorial Park; Thursday, 10:30-11:45 a.m. at Wildwood Park and 12:45-2 p.m. at Douma School.
On Friday, the Art in the Park Core Group will perform at Lunch in the Park from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at Central Park downtown. A program also is planned from 3-4 p.m. at the Gothic House Visitor Center in Eldon.
Fonsiba Koster of Fairfield gives a program on African drumming and culture, bringing 30 authenic African hand drums called jembe-drums which are hand-carved in the Ivory Coast. Besides making music, she uses her art to educate young people about the differences in cultures around the world.
