Free trumpet concert Thursday at IHCC
OTTUMWA — A free performance by Brazilian trumpet player Claudio Roditi, one of the world’s legendary jazz musicians, will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Indian Hills St. John Auditorium.
Accompanying Roditi will be some of the finest musicians in the state, including pianist Jason Danielson, bassist Steve Charlson, drummer Dennis McPartland and saxophonist David Sharp, who is also instructor of instrumental music at Indian Hills Community College.
The concert will feature a variety of jazz standards, Brazilian sambas and original compositions from Roditi’s latest recordings, “Impressions” and “Brazilliance X4.”
Roditi’s career has been influenced by recordings of American jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. After arriving in the United States, he began studies at the Berklee School of Music in Boston and in 1976, moved to New York City.
Roditi has performed with some of the greatest musicians in the world and has toured with Dizzy Gillespieís United Nations Orchestra. He has recorded over 20 albums as a leader. He currently leads his own groups performing in Europe and the United States.
